TOPS gallery will adopt the ArtsMemphis office space and gallery September 19 through November 14. TOPS at ArtsMemphis brings work by artists affiliated with the gallery to ArtsMemphis’ friends and donors.

The opening reception on Friday, September 19 will be at ArtsMemphis from 6 - 8 pm.

TOPS opened in October of 2012 with a show of photographer Victoria Sambunaris’ work and has since produced eleven one person shows. The gallery has shown work in varied mediums including sculpture, painting, installation, video, and photography.
The goal of the gallery is to produce ambitious exhibitions that engage the local community while simultaneously creating a dialogue with larger art centers.

The exhibition, titled How to carry a cloud, includes a series of new paintings that explore hidden sources of water in the desert landscape. Rivas uses clouds and creosote bushes as metaphors for the interconnected sources of life-giving moisture in arid regions. Both reflect water stored in the land and the air, deceptively close and yet inaccessible. Cloud forms appear across several works, oscillating between pattern and landscape.
