Between the Threads by Unnati Singh, at the Hindustan Times PALATE Festival

Recently ARTS 4 All presented Unnati Singh's site specific installation, Between the Threads, at the Hindustan Times PALATE Festival at the  Mahalaxmi Racecourse in Mumbai. Posted here is a photo essay of the installation that gives an idea of the scale and incredible complexity of the work. From the Press Release: Between The Threads: Unnati Singh  constructed this installation with objects that seem lost and discarded. She weaves a web with white cotton thread used in sacred rituals .Two old sewing machine stands create the centre stage for a human body as the core piece , woven and stretched in between. Everyday objects become unfamiliar. The woven threads make the familiar unfamiliar. A deep sense of fragility can be articulated by this feeling of being stretched or pulled by the unknown.   This work  metaphorically speaks of the human condition. It speaks of the ironic plight of a common man who is no less than a puppet .  Unnati...

A Quick Check in with Unnati Singh

Unnati Singh in her studio in Mumbai, 2018 Photo courtesy of the artist. I'm a big fan of Unnati Singh's artwork and have presented work and exhibit announcements by Singh in the past.  Here I want to take the opportunity to post a few images of current pieces the artist is working on. Unnati Singh is an Indian, multi-disiplinary artist currently based in Mumbai. "Her new works are a probe into time now . An exploration  into the accelerated pace of the current social and cultural fabric.  Blending material and methods, she keeps an experimental approach. Her current process establishes her ongoing dialogue between conscious and subconscious, between painting and reproduced images , between virtual and real."  You can keep up with Singh and her upcoming projects on Instagram , and  Facebook  . Below are details of new works in progress . . .  * All images provided by and  © Unnati Sin...

A WAY TO GALI QASIM JAN Introductory text by Unnati Singh Hai ab is māmūre meñ qaht-e-ġham-e-ulfat 'asad'  Ham ne ye maanā ki dillī meñ raheñ khāveñge kyā…….. Ghalib 's long journey from Delhi to Calcutta marked a significant period of his struggle and experiences as a poet. He arrived Calcutta in February 1828 via Lucknow, Allahabad and Benares . This period saw him write Gul-e ŕanā a collection inspired by Calcutta. After 190 years ten artists from Calcutta reflect back on the cities which hold Ghalib's heritage and it’s contemporary relevance .Their works create an intriguing allegory of multiple metaphors. These artists have tried to capture the internal rhythm , grace and beauty of the intricate culture Ghalib embraced in his poetry , layered with a resonance of wit and passion.
