Work by Alex Paik (left) and Debra Ramsay From the Press Release: Tiger Strikes Asteroid New York is pleased to present  Generative Processes , featuring the work of Alex Paik and Debra Ramsay. The exhibit highlights shared elements within their practices and cites the particular manifestation of each. The work operates on an intimate and humble level, combining the abstract and cerebral with grace and humor. While their color palettes generate an immediate sense of relationship, Paik arrives at his intuitively, while Ramsay’s is system-based. The artists share a generative process of making, a cultivation of a standardized element that is repeated and worked. In Alex’s case, it’s a geometric form, a unit that he multiplies and folds, orients or otherwise uses again and again to make the work. From the Press Release:  While working within the historical lineage of abstraction in New York, Vince Contarino operates within a specific and clearly-defined approach to painting. Central to Contarino’s work is a balancing act articulating form, pattern, and movement throug h his materials with a sensitivity to painting’s esoteric tendencies as an art form. By negotiating a space which simultaneously embraces the tight stylistic language of graphic relationships, while also subverting the same with a keen awareness of gesture and materiality, Contarino entices the viewer with immediate, slashing gestures and slow, deliberate forms. A couple of weeks ago I was fortunate enough to visit the Brooklyn studio of Alex Paik . Paik's small, delicate, abstract compositions of paper, gouache, and colored pencil provide complex visual experiences form humble means.  In addition to his prolific studio practice, Paik is also the Director of  TSA , an artist run, artist curated exhibition space in Bushwick. From the Artist's Statement: Songwriter Harlan Howard once said that all you needed to write a good country song was “three chords and the truth.” In many ways, my process follows this maxim -- by taking a lo-fi and straightforward approach to artmaking, I hope to reveal some truth about my materials or process and create work that is sincere, graceful, and intimate. My small-scale paper assemblages hug the line between being tightly composed and loosely improvised and recall the early formal experiments of the 60s and 70s and the serious playfulness of Paul Klee, Richard Tuttle ...
