From the Press Release: Norte Maar is pleased to announce its collaboration with  Sundaram Tagore Gallery  to present a landmark retrospective of work by  Edith Schloss  (1919-2011) , one of America’s greatest expatriate artists whose paintings, assemblage, collage, watercolors and drawings border on the bittersweet, fragile, intimate and naïve. Intrinsically linked to the milieu of Postwar American Art, every aspect of the artist’s eccentric personal iconography will be on view for rediscovery. This is the first show of the artist’s work in New York in twenty-five years. This exhibition continues Norte Maar’s mission of re-presenting the work of under represented emerging, mid-career and historic artists. Photo by Marjorie Becker Fri, Mar 16, 6:30pm at NYCAMS (44 West 28th Street, 7th flr) Cage Transmitted: Evening 3 Part 1:  Channeling John Cage’s revolutionary use of radios as instruments, sound artist  Tamara Yadao  will construct an improvised score for this unique evening celebrating Cage. Yadao will also be sourcing melodic ornaments, drones, and rhythmic pulses from her  Game Boy . Part performance, part installation the event will take place at New York Center for Arts and Media Studies as part of the closing reception of the exhibition “What I Know,” curated by Norte Maar’s Director, Jason Andrew. This evening of  Cage Transmitted  comes with special thanks to  Ian Colletti  and  Jessen Jurado . For Cage Transmitted: Evening 3 Part 1, Tamara will be performing with  Zen Albatross and Nicole Carroll (a.k.a  n0izmkr ).

Futuro anteriore VI: Sarà sempre stato un fatto di partenze, scoperte, rovine Future Perfect VI: It will Have Always Been a Matter of Departure, Discoveries, Ruins, 2012, mixed-media collage and drawing, with ink and acrylic mediums on layered sheets of gessoed paper 19 ¾ x 14 ¾ inches Norte Maar is pleased to present Paul D’Agostino: Appearance Adrift in the Garden. This is the first one-person exhibition of the artist’s work and will feature new prints and collages in which color, time, and subject fade into and feed off of one another. The exhibition opens with a reception for the artist on February 3 from 6-9pm. Jason Andrew , the driving force and Co-Director of the Brooklyn staple, Storefront Gallery , is also the the man behind Norte Maar . Since 2006 the non-profit has encouraged and promoted collaborations between the visual, literary, and performing arts in Bushwick and beyond. The professionally run space is all the more impressive because it is operated from Andrew's apartment. This fact is deceiving. I expected a dark, cramped space that could not possibly do much for the art on display. Instead I found a welcoming "white cube" where the work was showcased at the expense of the living space.  Andrew's curitorial skills are first rate. He builds cohesive exhibits that allow each artists' work to stand out while presenting an artfully arranged whole. I recently paid a visit to the Bushwick studio of the painter Patricia Satterlee . Satterlee's large paintings on paper are unique for a number of reasons. First, they are large, at a time when many Brooklyn painters are scaling down. Second, and more importantly, they combine the rough spontaneity of the preliminary sketch with an elegant, minimal thoughtfulness that one usually associates with theory-heavy formal work.   A language has evolved here. The repetition of elements produces a myriad of distinct but connected forms whose identities can be underscored or obscured by propping up a line with a diffused aura or by blotting out or by making form transparent with the laying on of paint.
