The Sublime Revisited examines how contemporary artists explore the diverse and sometimes conflicting ideas of the sublime, with themes in relation to the awesome, the beautiful, terror, nature, technology, transcendence, and altered states. Works on view will provide a philosophical and cultural context for discourse around the sublime in art as it has evolved over time from the writings of Longinus, Burke and Kant to present day.

The exhibit features works by: Toby Barnes, Dennis Cady, Bryan Christie, Liz Ensz, Snow Yunxue Fu, Abhi Ghuge, Aron Johnston, Christopher Lonegan,
George Lorio, Caitlin McCormack, Kyle McKenzie, Sophia Narrett, Chee Wang Ng, Eric Norby, Jaeman Shin, Raphael Fenton-Spaid, Ana Vizcarra Rankin, Rachael Wren, and William Ruller.

The exhibition, titled How to carry a cloud, includes a series of new paintings that explore hidden sources of water in the desert landscape. Rivas uses clouds and creosote bushes as metaphors for the interconnected sources of life-giving moisture in arid regions. Both reflect water stored in the land and the air, deceptively close and yet inaccessible. Cloud forms appear across several works, oscillating between pattern and landscape. He chooses fragile materials that he weaves, knots, suspends, sometimes playing with the influence of gravity, which he uses to his advantage. As much in her paintings as in her sculptures, contrasting tones are juxtaposed with harmony, giving birth to unexpected chromatic variations. We never complete our discovery of her palette.
