The Painter Eva Hesse

The hell with them all. Paint yourself out, through and through, it will come by you alone. You must come to terms with your own work not with any other being.
-Eva Hesse

The Brooklyn Museum is currently showing Eva Hesse Spectres 1960 and some of the images included in this post will be on view. The exhibit offers an often overlooked aspect of the great sculptor's artistic output and shows her to be an interesting, formidable and influential painter.

Eva Hesse is one of the most organic artists I have ever come across. It's a tragedy that her life ended so suddenly, but even in her short term she managed to be completely authentic to herself as well as her craft. That is to be commended.

Thanks for posting Paul, I remember one of the best days of my life I went to the Robert Miller Gallery when I lived in NYC and her paintings were hanging there, it was so wonderful to see them up close, I hope to see this show.

I dont care for the paintings as much as her 3D work..but she is pretty damn sexy.

@Lucy: I look forward to seeing the show next week. I think she's very underrated as a painter. It's not often you see an exhibition of them. I would also like to see some of the abstract ones in person.

@Dwayne: I really like the 3-d work too. She also did some relief paintings that serve as a smoother transition to her sculpture. I've also got a very nice book of her drawings...

Impressive! Thanks Paul. I have not seen so many of her paintings before.
What is a size category of these works? I mean, very large or small...?
Paul Behnke said…
@ Debu: Mostly I THINK they are a medium easel size but I will let you know after I see the show next week.
Thanks, Paul. I'm seeing these for sure.

Justine Rivas at The Valley

Photo courtesy of The Valley   Justine Rivas: How to Carry a Cloud Up through August 7, 2021 The Valley 1800 Camino del La Placita, Unit D Taos, NM 87571 From the Press Release: The Valley is pleased to present its first solo exhibition with Los Angeles-based painter Justine Rivas . The exhibition, titled  How to carry a cloud,  includes a series of new paintings that explore hidden sources of water in the desert landscape. Rivas uses clouds and creosote bushes as metaphors for the interconnected sources of life-giving moisture in arid regions. Both reflect water stored in the land and the air, deceptively close and yet inaccessible. Cloud forms appear across several works, oscillating between pattern and landscape. As above, so below- creosote in its various forms appear as a familiar and familial plant speaking to the artists’ connection to the desert landscape, her family has lived in the borderlands since t...

Current Show at Galerie Victor Sfez - On View Through April 23

EXHIBITION OF 19 MARCH TO 23 April 2016 DANIEL G. HILL develops a sensitive geometry. He chooses fragile materials that he weaves, knots, suspends, sometimes playing with the influence of gravity, which he uses to his advantage. A keen observer, he seizes the moment and the detail to create work of unusual and poetic balance. JOCELYNE SANTOS is a color magician. As much in her paintings as in her sculptures, contrasting tones are juxtaposed with harmony, giving birth to unexpected chromatic variations. We never complete our discovery of her palette. New nuances invite surprise, illusions dazzle our eyes, and that which is hidden in the work ends up being its main concern. SHAWN STIPLING works with perception. Space is always present, suggested by clever crossings and misleading offsets that generate new virtual planes. The simplicity of his line is only an appearance: executed by hand, it still takes on a deliberately mechanical look. Confiding to us, the ...
