Norte Maar is pleased to present Paul D’Agostino: Appearance Adrift in the Garden. This is the first one-person exhibition of the artist’s work and will feature new prints and collages in which color, time, and subject fade into and feed off of one another. The exhibition opens with a reception for the artist on February 3 from 6-9pm. A reading from the artist’s latest chapbook, published in collaboration with Norte Maar, will take place on Sunday, February 19 at 4pm.

In all her work, Gilfilen’s interest in spatial complexity and layering is apparent. Her generous use of negative space serves to enhance the raw power that comes from the core of the painting. While the activity within Gilfilen’s paintings can be fierce and active, a closer look reveals great restraint and a very concise, specific set of visual cues that she uses to create these abstract representations. Her paintings can appear volatile and deliberate at the same time and piecing that puzzle together results in paintings that are anything but arbitrary.

George McNeil (1908 - 1995) was a pioneer Abstract Expressionist and had over forty solo exhibitions during his lifetime.

The exhibition is comprised of a group of sixteen works that date from between 1957 and 1969. This period demonstrates an important transitional period for McNeil from his signature multi layered abstractions to a growing interest in figurative associations.

Theodore:Art is pleased to present the first exhibition in our new home in Bushwick: work by Dana Bell, Alasdair Duncan, and Don Voisine.

These three artists, while creating very different work, all touch on the possibilities of communicating ideas in a space outside of language. The familiarity of signifiers – form and gesture – is offered without the reliable connection of a signified or finite meaning. A viewer is confronted with evasive focus: unspoken directions, mute expressions, opaque progressions. The potential “unity of the thing” is proffered as a semblance of infinite suggestion.

Studio Visit w/ Vincent Hawkins: Liberating Forms

Vincent Hawkins is a painter living and working in London.

His work, seemingly playful and intuitive, rewards the attentive viewer as the aforementioned qualities give way to a painterly rigor and sophistication. The "serious play" of Klee or Matisse is brought to mind but never overshadows Hawkins' own certain personality and unique pictorial vocabulary.

I seem to be not able to stop making work. Perhaps it comes out of the fact that it’s an activity on one's own terms, the one thing you might be able to control in life. It doesn't really matter if nobody likes what you do; it’s more the development of a "dialogue" and therein lays its success if that is what is happening, as I see it.

So what were, for me, rather image laden paintings of a couple of years ago, began to change and be more pared back, reducing.... to the point of liberating forms out of the paintings and into the world.

I like to explore the area between what's private and what's exposed. I enjoy paintings that are secretive and a little unclear. I try to never think when I'm painting because, if I do, I'll ruin it.

Torres’ works are visually potent, portable exercises in color and composition, and of the psychologically-charged underpinnings that they explore. The works on view at RAM can be divided into two groups: composite works, known as her “puzzle paintings,” which consist of grids of individual works on paper that serve both as their own works and inform parts of the larger whole, and individual works on paper. Torres’ unbridled experimentation and expression conjures relations to Modernist artists Philip Guston and Eva Hesse’s lesser known works on paper, while achieving a freshness that still relates to contemporary movements.

Studio Visit with Karl Bielik

On a recent trip to London I had the opportunity to take a look inside the studio of Karl Bielik. I first became aware of Bielik's work in 2010 and quickly came to admire the paintings' straight forward painterliness and unique vocabulary of mark and form.

From Bielik's website, Statement:

Working on a multitude of paintings at a time, Karl Bielik's brew of abstractions are developed in batches. Irregular canvases cover his studio walls and floors, where he shifts from one painting to another, experimenting playfully with mark making.

Formal lines taken from photographs and diagrams contrast loose oily wounds, thick emulsions offset light glazes and dribbles. Bielik fluctuates between techniques, pushing and challenging the paint until a kind of harmony is met.

In contrast to this emotive imagery, banal solitary words form Bielik's titles, tempering and balancing the melancholy character of his paintings; the result, a prolific collection of finely tuned sophisticated studies.

Bielik is also the Director of Terrace Gallery and Studios in East London. In addition the artist also writes and performs in the musical group Lark who's new release I Don't Got is available on iTunes. More information on Bielik's music can be found on the band's Facebook page here.

Bob gave a four hour lecture in his studio starting at three A.M., after we had been at the Five Spot listening to Thelonius [sic] Monk. After the lecture, Bob and I drove to Staten Island just to ride over the new Verazzano [sic] Bridge...Bob painted the whole next day and well into the night. No sleep for 36 hours...
